The people who finish a laser hair removal course are almost always the ones who started it in October. The people who start in April tend to stall by June, because summer is exactly when the treatment gets harder to do safely.
The reason is melanin
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle. The laser is looking for melanin — and it cannot tell the difference between melanin in a follicle and melanin in recently tanned skin. When the surrounding skin is holding colour, the energy has competing targets, which means we have to treat more conservatively, or not at all.
Our Alma Soprano XL is a 810 nm diode running in SHR mode, which gradually heats the follicle rather than delivering a single aggressive pulse. It is genuinely comfortable and safe across a wide range of skin types. But no device rewrites the physics: tanned skin narrows what we can do.
- Sun exposure in the two weeks before a session changes the settings we can use.
- Self-tanner counts. It sits in the same layer the laser reads.
- A tan acquired mid-course means a session gets postponed, and the schedule slips.
A course is not an appointment
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase. At any moment only a fraction of your hair is there — which is why a single session, no matter how well performed, cannot finish the job.
A realistic course is six to eight sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight on the body. That is six to ten months, honestly stated. Starting in October means the bulk of the work happens through winter, when your skin is naturally at its least sun-exposed, and you arrive at next summer finished rather than halfway.

What we need from you between sessions
- Shave the area 12–24 hours before — do not wax, pluck or thread. The laser needs the follicle intact underneath.
- No self-tanner for two weeks before.
- SPF on anything exposed, all winter. Dallas sun in January is still sun.
- Tell us about any new medication. Several common ones are photosensitising.
None of that is onerous. It is just the difference between a course that runs on schedule and one that keeps getting rescheduled.
What about blonde, red, grey or white hair
Honestly: the laser needs pigment, and hair without it gives the energy nothing to target. We will still treat you — plenty of people have mixed hair, and the darker portion responds well — but we will tell you in advance which hairs are unlikely to respond rather than selling you a series and letting you discover it in month four.
That conversation happens at the consultation, with the area in front of us, before anything is booked.
